Overtime win off Benz tip in home opener

After a wild third period, the Hawks prevailed in overtime 4-3 over the Academy of Holy Angels in Chaska's home opener. Blaine Warnert (10) started the scoring in the first period on the powerplay after a Holy Angels defender mistakingly cleared a rebound into his own net. In what was a low-shooting period, the Hawks finished the first 17 minutes outshooting the Stars 5-2.

Holy Angels tied the game midway through the 2nd period off a powerplay goal before Parker Hanson (12) shot home his first goal in a Hawks sweater less than two minutes later. Senior captain Andrew McClure and Keith Fletcher (10) were credited with the helpers on Hanson's goal.

In the third, Holy Angels tied the game once again with 2:14 left to play. Eleven seconds later Warnert fired home his 2nd of the night with assists going to Calvin Barrett (9) and Billy Bronson (10). The lead didn't last long, as Holy Angels knotted things up at 3-3 with 1:28 remaining. The overtime was all Chaska, and after a crossbar attempt from Mike Koster (10) ricocheted back out to the blue line, John Starkey (10) shot through the traffic to find Ethan Benz (10), who tipped it out of midair and through the five-hole.

Chaska is now 2-0 on the season, and travels to Mankato East for the second game of back-to-back contests Friday night.
